I wish there was a little keyboard part. A simple one. This song seems like the type to rely on its lyrics so I feel they could be a little fresher. We're all lost in this maze? hmmmm.....
Thanks for the pop comparison, I'm an old skool writer in that I always try to make things quite hooky, sometimes for good and sometimes for bad I'm told! I agree with you that a keyboard part would be nice, unfortunately when I played the drum track earlier in the week I wasn't thinking about structure too much and I should have realised it would be slightly cramped. The lyrics might seem a little dodgy, but read them in the archive and consider the source (Cuckoo's Nest) and they might make more sense, and I like Gareth's Mice in the maze line with the cheese, it wouldn't be us without some dodgy line in there....
j$ wrote:Likely Lads - This needs some serious production on the individual tracks. Country rock needs to be practically over-produced to make it really work, in my opinion. Very Badfinger I guess. A bit plodding. A bit of variety to the drums might cure that. The vocals wander off the melody at times. No, sorry, I have to stop it now. There's nothing wrong with it I guess, but there's nothing that great about it either.
Yeah I agree that we could have sit the tracks better with more EQ and compression work, it's something we're still trying to learn properly, and I apologise for my poor drumming, I'm no drummer, I just like to get live drums on our tracks sometimes and often the easiest way is to play them ourselves, our live drummer would cringe at that results. I don't see how we're country though, there's a big fat distorted guitar in the chorus and there's no fiddle or lyrics about cousins and freeways... sorry you couldn't make it all the way through, your loss - there's dancing girls and free beer in the last 20 seconds.
the human cello wrote:The Likely Lads*: This is pretty charming. You've got a great vibe going in your music. It always hooks me right in. Some of those harmonies sound off (intentional clashes) but if it isn't intentional, it's still pretty good.
Maybe even better. Gets a little boring. You should add a guitar solo or a bridge. 3 and 1/2 stars
Thanks very much, you're charming yourself. The harmonies are a little rough yeah, but you get the idea. Thanks for listening and thanks for the stars, i agree that another section would be a good addition. And Thank you for saving the song.
WeaselSlayer wrote:The Likely Lads: I really like these kind of intros, the sort of indie rock roadtrip riff. I'm enjoying this a lot. The harmonies in the chorus have a great simplicity to them, very stable and rich. This seems very marketable.
Thank you. Thanks a really nice review.
fried wrote: The Likely Lads: The instruments are pretty good. Love the feel. I can't say I am a fan of the vocals. They are pitchy at spots. The lyrics don't make much sense too me. Grade B+
Cheers, glad you like the mood and yeah the vocals could do with a rerecord, such are the pressures of writing and recording all the parts in a week! thanks for listening

Wow. sounds like some classic rock band I don't know, but don't know too well. then you kind of ruin it with the chorus. It also has a little Modest Mouse feel to it, esp the beginning music and voice. The lyrics are appropriately grungy. Really, the only thing really wrong with this song is the harmony on the chorus. It is less professional and authentic than the rest of the song. Is this based on Bubba Ho-Tep? The ending is a little anti-climactic. I was almost hoping for a fade out or something. Or maybe a blistering guitar solo. Or a leisurely guitar solo. Though I suppose no guitar solo is better than some lame-ass guitar solo that completely takes me out of it. Not to say that's what you'd do. But if that's what you were gonna do, thanks for not doing it. Ooh, maybe a nice little slow fiddle solo might do the trick...
Thanks very much for the great detailed review. I love Modest Mouse so that's a great compliment, and yeah the harmonies are a little rough, I don't know Bubba Ho tep though, what
s that? haha

Yikes, sorry to disappoint. haha

Mostess wrote:The Likely Lads entry sounds real, like a live band at an outdoor concert. I like that here. The guitar work is gentle but full. The parallel perfect intervals of the vocals bugs me, but that's no deal breaker. A darned good song.
thanks very much!

how is this not likeable? it isn't. What a great vibe.. the drums could be a smidge louder/beefier...but I really like the guitar sounds..they work well for this mix. this is well crafted. dontcha love when you hear a sf track and it makes you go to check the archives for more? Sweet, possible vote.
Thank you very much, nice review. I agree with you on the drums, we were wrestling with them for a while. That's a really great thing to say, i hope you liked the other tracks. You made me smile a heap!

This is groovy bar rock, and I'm diggin it. Yeah. My head is bobbin, shoulders slightly hiked up... one thing is for sure, this is way better than modest mouse. haha. I liked that, nice vibe, well recorded.
Thanks very much.

A nice solid song, performed well. The bass and the chord progression give the song a faint Motown aroma, but with Springsteen doing the lead vocal. Perhaps re-record the vocals with a little more attention to perfection and it's ready for pressing. Nice work.
hey thanks very much, we actually realised during recording that the E/F#/A/B chorus I'd written was the bridge to 'My Girl' Whoops! Nice spot.

It's John Mellencamp. (Two people said that.) This one is pretty good! Singing lessons would help. I want to fix my car to this music. "Take it to the bridge!" I don't mind this one.
Cool idea to grab some buddies and review. Who's John Mellencamp though haha?
feldspar wrote:Likely Lads: Mellencamp would be proud. [okay]
I'm gonna assume that's a good thing and say Thanks!
Thanks for all the reviews guys!
