songfight on turntable.fm

Links and other hanky panky that doesn't have to do with anything in particular.

It's a free/open source streaming server, so you're not beholden to some crap-ass proprietary plugin windows-only advertising machine. It works on any computer. You give it some source files (like the songfight playlist) and then tell people's media players/browser/whatever to connect to http://foo/stream.

Downside is that someone has to run the icecast server, but there's a buttload of competent dudes on here willing and able to do so.

Keep it in the family man. That turntable.fm crap looks cool, but it severely limits people who don't want to be part of the facebook collective.

We're talking about it in the chatroom right now.

The pertinent detail that just sold me on Icecast is this: NO ONE NEEDS TO DOWNLOAD OR INSTALL ANYTHING except for the person hosting the party. The host provides everyone else with a URL to connect to. Plug that URL into your player of choice (VLC, Windows Media Player, iTunes, Winamp, &c) at the scheduled time, and you'll be in!

The one drawback is that Icecast doesn't have a chat feature. Join the chat room at euirc.net, #Songfight! and talk about all the stuff as it's playing. BAM! Insta-party!

I set up a proof-of-concept demo site that is streaming the current fight. Aim your mp3 player of choice (VLC, winamp, etc) at http://table2.com:8000/under_over and give it a spin. Pop into the chat room via the webpage or use an irc client to discuss.

Excellent proof of concept. And after pouring through the Icecast documentation, I am waving a white flag. This is way above my technical knowledge. I'm not unwilling to learn, but I would need a lot of help putting this together for the first time. If anyone is willing to do this (or set up the shell that would just let me run the listening party, like an MC), I'd be very grateful.

I believe Irwin and Spud have already talked about doing exactly that. :)

So... any word if we could have something for the "ruthless lately" fight?

I haven't heard from Spud, and the fight isn't up yet, so ... we're on IRC shooting the shit.

Alas, that's probably going to be past my bedtime.

But I still really, really want to do something like this. Can we get well-organized for "Circle Me"? I'd love to do it SpinTunes style and PREMIERE the fight on the live broadcast, so the .MP3s would be posted the next morning or just after the broadcast.

You know, we have a big East coast West Coast split; we should probably plan for two times, à la prime time TV...

I'm up for it. Will the stream just show up on the main page for the icecast server or do we need to know the magic path to tune in to?

Also I suspect I should actually, you know, get an IRC client again. Or something.

We forgive you, especially since Ranger Denni has promised some audio.

But BLT, you're on the list! ;-)

No, seriously, that was pretty cool last night. I'm glad that I was up late enough to come hang out. DEFINITELY need to do this with mucho folks for "Circle Me." The new timing idea is 7:00 PM Pacific time the day the songs are posted. But the stream will keep scrolling, too, so if you come late, that's cool.

just point your favorite media player to : http://table2.com:8000/"fight_title" (i.e., http://table2.com:8000/ruthless_lately) and then your favorite web-browser here : http://jan-krueger.net/sf-irc

(BTW, admins, this conversation has morphed, can we change the subject heading?)

The way Irwin has set it up, you do not need a Facebook account. Chris, what program do you normally use to play your music?

96% of the planet cannot sign up to turntable

We're very sorry, but while we would love to let you in and rock out with us, we need to currently restrict turntable access to only the United States due to licensing constraints.

Program? When I listen to music on SF, it uses quick time. When I listen to songs I download, it defaults to windows media player. I prefer QT.

QT doesn't support streams directly, although iTunes does (but it's kind of assy). Windows Media Player supports streams. VLC is even better for streams - try that out.

Quicktime is one of the only programs that will have problems with this, actually. In theory, I think you can just paste the URL (like http://table2.com:8000/ruthless_lately ) into your browser and Quicktime will start streaming, but Quicktime attempts to buffer the whole audio file before playing, and in this case, the audio file doesn't have an end, because it's a live stream.

You can also open up Windows Media player and choose File-->Open URL, then paste the URL into that box, and it will load up the stream that way, as well.
