West of Vine - Let It [SHADOW]
When you went and made your heart such an open place
You didn't think about who might come rushing in
When they went back out and left you all that empty space
You didn’t think you’d ever open it again
Last night you drank the poison
Thinking it was someone else that’s gonna die
But you woke up in the half-light of this morning
Holding on to all that hate all you could do was cry
And baby it’ll get you if you let it
So don’t let it
Don’t let it
Thirty-two years and ninety-six tears and all you’ve got is questions
The answer to the lessons passed you by, but now it’s time to let in the light
So if you came here looking for something you couldn't find
I don't want to be the one who let’s you down
But if you came here looking for someone who wouldn't mind
Well I'm the one to tell you, that's just what you found
And baby it’ll shine in you let it
So just let it
Just let it
Just let it come back in
When you went and made your heart such an open place
You didn't think about who might come rushing in
When they went back out and left you all that empty space
You didn’t think you’d ever open it again
Last night you drank the poison
Thinking it was someone else that’s gonna die
But you woke up in the half-light of this morning
Holding on to all that hate all you could do was cry

The Moon Bureau - Susie, Sunday Morning [SHADOW]
Susie, Sunday morning
Pristine rain is falling
Her breath, it fogs the windowpane
Monday bestride the fence
Overtaken by events
That she could never quite explain
A stain of iodine?
Or just a jaundiced eye?
She’s seeing yellow yet again
Yet again
A text on Tuesday afternoon,
“<3 c u soon”
You’d fallen harder than you knew
That night to your surprise
Reluctance in her eyes
A sinking feeling that you’re through
She and you
Wednesday morning full of woe
Like the children's poem goes
In the morning Suzie has to go
Susie, Sunday morning
Pristine rain is falling
Her breath, it fogs the windowpane
Monday bestride the fence
Overtaken by events
That she could never quite explain
A stain of iodine?
Or just a jaundiced eye?
She’s seeing yellow yet again
Yet again

In the morning Suzie has to go

Nathan Joe Long - What I Never Had [SHADOW]
The Pacific only looks peaceful
When you're looking from afar
It's not till you get 7 miles deep
Will you find rest your soul can keep
Will you find rest your soul can keep
Mariana is hiding an oyster
That swallowed a grain of sand
It covered its pain in a pearly white sheen
But can't catch light its never seen
It can't catch light its never seen
And I so want to be
Who you want me to be
Passage and harbor
Lighthouse and martyr
I can't give what I never had
I can't give love I never had
This song centers around the feeling that you know something exists but you just can't reach it. It's a feeling that oscillates from crushing to comforting. That made me think of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific that is deeper than Everest is tall (10.9 km vs. 8.8 km). The darkness at the bottom of the trench is called the hadal zone and it's complete because sunlight can't penetrate that much water. I also find oysters delicious and impressive with their ability to transform an irritation into a gem. They would be instantly crushed by the pressure at the bottom, but if they were down there and happened to have a pearl it wouldn't shine either way. The bridge feels like sinking and the last chorus feels like acceptance.
Margot played all the good harp parts.

Siebass - The Butterfly Garden in the Zoo [SHADOW]
The Butterfly Garden in the Zoo
It's fallen into disrepair
The butterfly garden in the zoo
Most people don't even know it's there
The butterfly garden in the zoo
My mother she's standing there
You know she's only five foot two?
I imagine guards watching her in black and white
on Closed circuit tv, wondering what she'll do
She's checking her peripheries
At the butterfly garden in the zoo
She pulls out two giant tupperwares
The lids electric blue
They're eager to be emptied
At the butterfly garden in the zoo
Looks left and right, opens the lids
she's only five foot two
Dumps out a streaming mess of ash, but doesn't stand upwind and gets (some on her shoes
Dusting off human remains
At the butterfly garden in the zoo
I stand nearby, watch the Northern path
A crime, I'm aiding and abetting
We'd be quite the pair to get locked up
At the butterfly garden in the zoo
And mostly I feel guilty
That I should feel more pain
I crack jokes to break the tension
Stoic and sad, that I still remain,
And I can't imagine how much pain she feels
But I can taste it, with two boys of my own
Still I just keep right on living
All the same
After dumping two mountains of dust
I'm sure he'd think it hilarious
Gusting his ashes
at our mother at the garden in the zoo
It's fallen into disrepair
Not sure how much longer it will be there
But we'll keep on placing
stones at an unmarked grave
At the butterfly garden
in the zoo
Challenge - Using Micah's chord sheet, attempted to write a song in G Major. I am weak on theory, so I tried to use what was there, but if I erred, I assure you I tried hard to meet the challenge.
I went G7 to C major for most of the song, with some A7 to D major, and B7 to E minor all attempted.
