Halfway through recording this, "Terrapin Station" suddenly popped in my head. I think it's the noodling up on the 10th and 12th frets on the fourth 'verse' measures. Also some of my vocal delivery sounds a little Jerry. Interesting, cause I didn't think I had it in me!
actually, it reminded me alot of something jerry might do solo later in his career. he had this knack for doing odd covers (like daniel lanois' "the maker", which was awesome) and your tune reminded me of something he/they would do. cool arrangement (terrapinesque?), and i think you're right, you did some stuff vocally that made me think jerry as well.

i bet king arthur would agree.

Hehehe  You nailed it! Except cousin Jethro cooks meth. We grow the weed back in the cornpatch.

The one on the double-disk live set "Shining Star" is v good, as is the title track... I like that album. I figured you could find some on archive.org, but they seem to have no Jerry Garcia even though there are 2800+ Grateful Dead shows (weird). Maybe somewhere else on the net.

Hey, Jack. I don't doubt that it links to "satisfaction," in fact I've listened to it a few times already. I'm talking about the hyperactive nephew changing the radio dial at 0:12.

Oh, also - the fullsize artwork for this fight is AWESOME! Props Morgan, (who did all three)

I just tried to quickly do reviews before taking off for the weekend. Once I got to Eddiebangs's song, I stopped thinking that everybody's songs sounded like ass, and realized that there was something wrong with my audio interface. Everything sounded like 64kbps mono! So I restarted and that fixed the problem but now I don't have time to do reviews. Overall I thought it was a solid fight, with some really good entries. I'm curious where DJ3XHC got those samples. I don't have many other specific comments at this point. I'll do reviews when I get back in town Monday night perhaps.

It's a really big fight! This doesn't suprise me considering the titles this week.
Enough said.

DR Awkward.
Where is my skateboard? This genre isn't my bag these days, but I think I might have done a stage dive during one of your shows when I was fifteen.
Rawk!

Loyalty Day.
What can I say, I like our song. These vocals were recorded using Ken's laptop in the guest bedroom of my apartment in SanFrancisco, which was kind of an experiment. I really think Sam's guitar is what makes this song. Ken's drums, and Rhodes are solid per usual. Here's hoping our Late-nite Sunday efforts paid off!

Johnsonic.
This song is good stuff. Maybe your vox can be louder? Maybe It's my crappy speakers.

Beatnik Turtle.
The intro gets me. I'm transported to some funky-psychadelic childrens program. Oh wait, those lyrics aren't for the kiddies at home! Do you like the DeadMilkmen? Your sorta sounding like a folky version of them.

Ryanrichenbach.
The beginning has sort of a mod-esque feel to it. Very 60's Brit-pop. I'm liking the whole concept, except something about the synch up half way through the chorus sounds a bit off. Maybe it's on purpose? Hmmmm. Either way, catchy little tune.

SFO.
Dare to keep kids off drugs.
Thank you for the funky public service announcement!

Stolarske.
Whoah. Shred. The guitar gods have whispered sweet nothings in your ear, but you were listening to Iron Maiden. This is what happens, I've seen it before. Nice solo.

dj3xhc.
I do like some industrial music from time to time. Very WaxxTraxx circa 1992. Lords of Acid meets Front 242 crossed withMeatbeat manifesto.

Eddie bangs.
Your lyrics are thoughtful. You certainly can belt it out, in tune even. I can see your song being used in an action Movie. You know, the one where the wimpy guy decides he's not gonna take it anymore, and he's gonna get pumped and go kick some ass. Yeah, like that.

SpudsyMalone.
Put the spoon down and back away from the potatoes man.

Onemanshat.
Groovy. That's a really catchy loop. Kinda swampy down in the Bayou. I'm diggin it.

Luke Henley.
Nice harmony. Your songs make me feel like I'm viewing your life from outside your apartment window. The tambourine sounds hopefull.

Smalltown Mike.
Guitar sounds nice and clear. I notice how you refference the other song titles a little. You have a nice sense of timing in your pauses. I could see Patti Smith singing this song.

Hans Gruber.
Not really my style, but I can appreciate what your doing. I really like the keysboard going on.

whew, that's alot of music. There's something heartwarming about Luke Henley, something crazy about Spudsy, and something deeply metal about Stolarskye. Thanks for the entertainment boys!( And girls too I guess...there aren't many of us on Songfight!)

OK - here they are... Also - I don't know if the caliber of songcraft is going up on songfight, or I'm just getting more used to the type of stuff on here, but this week's fight was awesome.

SFO
Cool Segment.

Ryan Rickenbach
Cool, laid back vibe. Great production. 1st verse sounds a bit contrived. Something sounded out of synch at around 1:12. Actually, in a few spots. Has kind of a Monkees vibe.

Spudy Malone
OK?

Smalltown Mike
The guitar part has a Nirvana Unplugged thing happening. In it coming in it coming you me in it coming you me for.

Stolar Skye
Sounds rock radio ready. I like to hear the ROK!! Great voice.

Loyalty Day
Damn! Like it already... ohh pretty voice - like it more. Love the rhodes. Shit this is good. Really like the acoustic tone... sharp. On my iPod, Thanks!

Hans Gruber
Nice descending progression! Vocals could come up. I like the harmonies too!

One Man's Hat
Its a cool riff - i would have loved to hear a chorus. Love that buzzy guitar!

Dr. Awkward
Yeah! Skate/snowbard videos. Charged up, ROK. Not the kind of music I can personally get into, but well done nevertheless.

DJ3XHC
UGH. Really not my thing.

Eddiebangs
Like a lid on a pot cooking lobster that's about to boil over... K, now it's spilling on the stovetop. The lobster just jumped out of the pot and is crying. He climbed back in. I like this! I'll collab anytime.

Luke
Awesome harmony! Reaching / unsyncopated in spots but awesome nonetheless. I haven't been on here in a while and your recordings are getting much better. You rok... I dig how you can be screamin one song and mellowed out and rargh!

Beatnik Turtle
I'd like it much better if the vocals were less whiney, makes it sound like a joke song. The music was awesome though!

Johnsonic
My vocs are too low, too much verb on them too. I agree with all the input given here.
Smalltown Mike said: "But again—and I hate to be a stickler—why is it called What’s in it for me?"
I was thinking along the lines of genetics, heredity, apples and trees and whatnot...

My friend Lindsey and I are doing joint reviews muh fuggas.

Ashok Henley (me) -
A: I was depressed, blah blah blah. Whoever said my songs make them feel like they're watching my life from my apartment window "gets" it.
L: Werd. Tambourine + distance = no carb bliss.

Ryan Rickenbach -
A: Wow. It sounds like some other band was warming up and you started singing and they were like, "Who the fuck is this guy." I don't totally mean that negatively. It's got kind of a neat disconnected energy to it, and I like the chorus kind of.
L: Ooh. In a bad way.

Hans Gruber -
A: I'm swaying. Did you get Ryan Rickenbach to do vocals or what? This is a little too laid back I think, like you tried really hard to sound like you weren't trying. I like the bridge.
L: It's like Jack Johnson and Ben Harper procreated.
A: But more white.
L: But... I guess, I dunno, I like it.

Spudsy Malone and the what the fuck -
A: Shut the fuck up.
L: Wait... was that the end of the song?
A: Were you getting into it or something?
L: Fuck you. Seriously.

Eddiebangs -
A: I'm big on lyrics. Unfortunately for you! I like you rockin' out though, it's fun. I wanna like walk in slo-mo and punch some guy in the mouth to this.
L: This seems like it would play during the credits of a Keannu Reeves movie.
A: lol

DJ3XHC -
A: Hahaha, weener. I'm into it.
L: Ooh. In a pretty good way. Sex sells. (R Kelly pees on little girls.)
A: And what lucky girls they are.

Johnsonic -
L: It went downhill when it started, fuckin' Smashmouth.
A: That is harsh.

Smalltown Mike -
A: Is this one of my songs at the beginning or what? I think I saw you playing this on public access today. It was kickass because you were drunk and I think homeless.
L: Ashok, do we have to listen to this one all the way through?
A: Yes, because we get off on pain.
L: I'm a rape crisis counselor.
A: I need to talk to you then.

Beatnik Turtle -
L: I like it! But wait for the voice to start, it might change.
A: ...
L: Yup, it changed.
A: I like the... harmony...
L: You sound constipated.
A: Lindsey!
L: What?
A: Inappropriate!

One Man's Hat -
A: Soul Coughing?
L: Beck?
A: This has a cool laaaaid back quality to it, but with like a hint of sinister magick. Did the song just call me a "cunt"?
L: I really like it. PS - I don't like that word.
A: PS - you're a cunt.

Stolar Skye -
L: Sounds like Sonic the Hedgehog theme, like before he beats that monster guy.
A: Now it sounds like an anime theme song. I hope Yuri gets to his ballroom dance class on time so that the nurse with big ta-tas can increase the general sexual tension in the show until we realize she's a robot and is programmed to fuck him.
L: This is about the music, Lu... Ashok.
A: Oh, yeah, this song sucks in a cool way.

SFO -
A: Oh thank god this symphony went to Compton and then talked to Mike Patton.
L: It's kind of cool, I mean A for effort they probably worked hard on it. Or maybe they didn't, don't want to give them too much credit, nahmean?

Dr. Awkward -
A: I once played this game for playstation called Street Sk8r and it had a lot of shitty music in it.
L: Who do they sound like? Not the Ramones, but you know, somebody like that.
A: The Exploited?
L: Yeah I dunno, I don't really like it.
A: Yeah, I can't think of anything funny to say either.

Loyalty Day -
A: Nice cymbal shimmer. This is a grade A fuck jam.
L: I don't like girls...
A: I do. In the kitchen! Actually, I'm really into female vocalists and I like these vocals even though usually I like women to sound a little... huskier?
L: Ashok digs fat chicks hahahahahahahahahaha, no but this is alright.
A: Exactly.

A: This fight wasn't half bad.
L: You're right... it was ALL BAD!

congrats to loyalty day on the win. i listened to this fight a couple times in the background (turned the speakers up while i was in the next room staining baseboards and window frames) and, while i didn't really pay enough attention to do full reviews, i wanted to share a few impressions.

overall i liked pretty much all the songs, except the electronic one with all the synth cuss words. that one i deleted from the playlist for the second and third times through.

the first song (ashok henley, it appears) was a little bit disappointing as a lead-in to the rest of the fight, because it was written okay as far as i could tell, but just lacked a lot of excitement and interest.

the rest of the songs were pretty decent, or at least average. ryan rickenbach's wasn't my favourite, but i found it to be the most memorable, especially the chorus. to me, the stand-out tracks were eddiebangs, loyalty day, and the last one (stolar skye). if i had bothered voting, it would probably have been that one or else eddie's.

i also just wanted to point out the 11 second one about potatoes was pretty much genius. in the way that "i like to eat a sandwich" was genius. it encapsulated the title of the fight perfectly, and expressed a very simple emotion very tersely, and i really liked it. i guess it's one of those things that either you 'get it' and appreciate it, or you think it's a worthless piece of trash. either way, i thought it was very witty, as long as you never have another entry just like that again. then it turns into a bad gimmick.

anyway, nice fight everyone (except DJwhosawhatsit) and hopefully in the near(ish) future i'll get back into the habit of doing 'real' reviews of fights on occasion.
