Blue, thanks.
Just found a few more things on that cubase messageboard, something about running Windows service pack 2 with Layla driver 6.11.

I'll be back in a few days with the verdict.

Wow,

and in an amazing twist of coincidence, it seems that Pro-Tools have taken over Wizoo. This is wierd cos last year creamware underwent some serious problems (yeh, finacial crap, cos of massive development costs of a new unit*, which never really took off, despite its apparent quality). At this time Creamware let most of their engineers go and scaled back to a much smaller staff. All these engineers were then employed byWizoo.
So in effect - Pro-Tools have employed the Creamware engineers. Now that is a synchronicity, and one that in my opinion can only be good for Pro-Tools. Watch out for exiting development there

Tho I aint never tried one so I dont know.....They've now brought out a new device which is getting rave reviews called the Minimax ASB .... check it out. Its like the new Moog or something

The verdict is, the damn Layla box is defective and has been returned to Echo for investigation. I suppose we'll have a new one soon.

If anyone ever has probs w/ Layla 3G soundcard on a Windows XP system, let me know. I just boogied every possible dance step in that troop.

digidesign makes no worthwhile products in the under several thousand dollars price range. period. even if the a/d isn't terrible (which they are usually), they skimp out on plug-ins.

be especially wary of the digi 001, they're now obsolete (after pro tools 6.4).

the firepod is something i've been debating on getting...my preamp is a presonus and i love it...let me know how it is, if you get it.

I love it. It has an impedance matching switch that gives my direct-in guitar and bass a glaringly obvious tonal improvement (I never used a DI box before. Silly me). The mic pre is noiseless and good (I guess. I can't tell a good pre-amp from a shit pre-amp), but the instrument pre has some low-level digital static. Thankfully this static falls way way way below where my gates are set at, so I never really notice it. Probably my favorite thing is that the pre-amps have a built-in limiter, so I'm no longer afraid to do some shouting. Before I always recorded at like -24 db because otherwise when I got loud I would get clipping; unfortunately my old Soundblaster only recorded at 16 bits-per-sample, so this ate a huge portion of my bitdepth. Now I record at around -10 db (at 24 bitdepth, too).

I haven't tried its Midi ins'n'outs, but it would be pretty hard for Edirol to screw those up. Also haven't used its Digital In; I probably never will.

My second-favorite thing about it is the ability to record two signals at once (my SB had too much cross-talk between its channels to do this, plus it meant adapting down from a 1/4" mono and an XLR cable to a single 1/8" stereo cable, which felt dirty). I tested out my newfound dual-recording ability by doing a quick guy-n-guitar cover of a couple Brad Sucks songs. This also serves as a pretty good demo of the noise level of the UA-25. Please ignore the sloppy playing and the missed lyrics, or if you can't just keep repeating to yourself "one-take" over and over again.
