Ok, just to clear the air...It's not like I got up last week, worked on the song for 20 minutes and sent it off. I've never done Song Fight before and I discovered this fight about 2 hours before the deadline and I thought it would be fun to participate and in case you're wondering, I've already started on next week's challenge. I wasn't anticipating copious accolades But I wasn't expecting someone to act as though they were personally offended by my effort either. Also, after reading Dan-O's review of my song I went back and listened to his again. And I'm sorry, but it seems to me that calling my song "unimaginative" is a bit of a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Are you going to tell me that you haven't heard that same exact opening hook in a BB King song? Are you going to tell me some of those leads don't sound a touch Santana-esque? Dan-O is clearly a better musician than I am, with more knowledge of performing and recording, so I'd be likely to take to heart any advice he had to offer. But "unimaginative" seems like a bit of a cop out to me unless you are going to say "I've already heard this done by so-and-so". I personally don't know any songs that sound quite like mine does, but that doesn't mean I'm not subconciously influenced by something I've heard. So don't tell me I'm unimaginative, tell me who I'm borrowing too heavily from. That would seem more constructive to me anyway.erikb wrote:Oh come now, I was talking about the song. It was practically a review.

You seem like a good guy. I'm not trying to kick you down or anything, or poo-poo your song. Okay, maybe I am trying to poo-poo your song, but I'm not trying to poo-poo you. I suggested you spend more time on your next song because clearly you can play a guitar, sing, and arrange a song, so it's quite possible that if you sat down with a good chunk of time, you could make something good.
I'm the first one to tell people if a song is derivative or reminiscent of another song. I don't really think that the song is ripping off anyone. It's just kind of ho-hum.

Thank you erikb. Ho-hum I can live with, for this song anyway. Thanks for the kind words. I hope to not dissapoint with "Adonai". Trust me, it's gonna be different.erikb wrote:You seem like a good guy. I'm not trying to kick you down or anything, or poo-poo your song. Yeah, I know. A lot of completely unrelated personal drama at the house of Dan-O early this morning led to that outburst. Blah, blah, blah. Sorry everyone. I've got Snidely Whiplash helping me pack up the derailing equipment as I type this. I'll PM K_M_S and we can hash it out that way.jb wrote:Gee Dan-ODan-O from Five-O wrote:RAWR

I'm lookin forward to the time when this thread is about more reviews. That's right, I said it. No one is expected to review of course, but there are some good songs in this fight (sober... I'm still groovin on that one man). How can we have more dissention ABOUT reviews if we dont' even HAVE em?
See people... I'm thinkin big picture here. I just might review the songs again, but in a new format I"m calling "the schizophrenic":
It goes like this:Billy is the asshole. Bobby is the guy that wants to love everyone. Jenny has a dirty mind, and Kevin questions everyone's sexual orientation during the review process:
Dan-O from Five-0:
Billy: Derivative crap. Holy fuck, I've never heard THIS before. Hey, you should really consider going pro...no...really...
Bobby: Oh man! This is absolutely fantastic. Let's ignore the fact that we've heard this kinda thing.. cause we've never heard it this way before. C'mon, even in a subtle way, everyone is unique! I love how your experience comes through, how you make the best of what you got. I think I'd have a great time, hangin in the pub, listening to this, drinkin some brews with the gang... great job.
Jenny: I want to fuck you.
Kevin: You know, for a guy who says he's married, you spend an awful lot of time on the internet, arguing with ...the "boys". I dunno, I dunno, call me crazy, but I think there's some kinda ...hmmm...denial?
Call me.
... the review gang will be back.

Sounds fun, let me try.Leaf wrote:I just might review the songs again, but in a new format I"m calling "the schizophrenic":
Leaf62:
Billy: This is unimaginative. Is this what they pass off as music in Canada? Practice this phrase in preperation for your next career .... "Would you like fries with that?".
Bobby: Wow. This is without a doubt, the best song I've ever heard on Songfight. I can't believe one person can play all of those instruments as well as you do. This is so cutting edge. You're going to get signed to a label any day now, I know that for a fact. Heck everyone submitting here will get signed to a label. I haven't ever heard one bad song here. Ever!
Jenny: Leaf62 can bang me like he does those drums anytime.
Kevin: All that playing around in your music room doesn't leave much time for Mrs. Leaf, does it? She probably longs for the day that you weren't so interested in boys who play in bands. As if that day ever existed.
How did I do?

With big fights come few reviews. 'Shame.
The last two fights I've been in were gi-normous. Why did we wittle it back down to two titles? (Maybe this has been discussed, but I wasn't present.)
And what pisses me off the most is coming back to the board after a few hours and seeing the posts double and then finding no new reviews, just people bitching about the old ones. (As I type this review-less reply)

Oh hush. Dan-O was arguably mean, but he was talking about a song. I was maybe mean, but I was talking about a song. Those were reviews. The guy who made the song asked for clarification about the descriptions of his song, and got it. There was a dialogue going on. Reviews don't have to be a one-sided thing: actually discussing what someone thinks of your song is something that might give someone a better understanding of how their song is being recieved.Ryan Rickenbach wrote:With big fights come few reviews. Some Reviews:
Leaf62 - sounds very 311ish, but with unreverby drums and a singer speaking instead of singing. This is okay going on in the background, but nothing about it is really dragging me in. I think it would sound better to end on the heavy part repeated over and over again, rather than end on the quiet part. This song is okay, but not really my thing.
Andy Balham: Man, the guitar and the singer are doing the same thing. The guitar isn't playing a strong enough melody for the singer to ape it that closely. It makes the whole thing seem more repetitive than is good for the song. It's hard to easily differentiate between the verse and the chorus, and that makes the whole thing kind of blur into itself. The oohs on the chorus help a little bit, but not enough. I don't care for this song.
Barstools: Okay, this three chord thing has to change up at some point. You need to loosen up the melody on this song. Everything else is so fricking square and on the beat: the bass, the guitar, the drumming. If the melody was less structured and colored within the lines, it would help the flow of the song. Okay, at about 2:22, I looked at the clock to see how much more of the song was left. This bridge is possibly the worst bridge ever. It makes the song seem longer than it really is, by just being repetitive instead of fresh. I can't really remember this song after the fact, I just get a vague memory of that "Old Apartment" song by BNL. That song is okay. This song, I don't care for it.
Befores: This is very sweet background music. It's not my kind of music, but the voice and the instrumentation work against each other very well. I could stand to have the whole thing be a bit slower. I don't know if you considered it, but I wouldn't mind an even slower jam, as it were. The changes in dynamics are cool. This is good driving music, for like driving through the Arizona desert, with the moon shining down upon those big ass cactuses. This song is pretty cool. It's alright by me.
Beuhiss: The drum machine sounds draggy. The rest of it just sounds so uninspired. There seems to be very little differentiation between different parts of the song, and the vocals are hard to make out. I don't really like this song at all.
Carpet Burn: mmmmm, mathy. More passion from the singer, especially on the parts where it switches from loud to quiet. It sounds weird, how the music gets louder, but the vocals only get moderately more excited. This song would be more grabby if it had a big hooky chorus that wasn't so mathy. This song is okay.
Chief Takahah: Okay man, get on with it. This is all fine and good, but you're screwing around. Oh shit, it's really 13:20. Sorry, but I'm not listening to someone else's answering machine. I do not like this.
Damien Verrett: yay for Tullycraft. yay for casiocore. The words might be the best part of this, but it's hard to hear them with the muffly nature of the recording. The song needs more variation between the different parts, it starts to feel a little long, even at 2:37. I should probably like this more than I do, but I don't.
More later.

The drums are played by me (poorly) on my friend's Pearl Export (w/piccolo snare). The set is picked up with my two AT3035 condensers as overheads, and a fricking Peavey Diamond vocal mic on the kick. Eq'ed to taste. That's it.Dan-O from Five-O wrote:So now I gotta know if the guitar and bass parts are the keyboard or the real deal?
There is indeed guitar, but it mimics the bassline the whole song, so it gets a little lost. It's my new strat.
The organ solo and the rhodes you hear throughout is my motif.
The bass is a Modulus Flea IV, played by my buddy Barry. He was stoned and drunk at the time of recording.
I'm not happy with the song's structure, but I'm pretty happy with the sound, considering it was mixed entirely on headphones. I'm genuinely surprised at the reception thus far.
Reviews forthcoming.

Alright, review time. These will all be first impressions while I listen to the song.
Leaf62: Really well recorded. Pretty well written song. Not really my thing, but even still it's a good song. I have no criticism.
I'm not sure why that one came up first when I streamed the songs o_O since it's out of alphabetical order... but whatever.
Andy Balham: Pretty neat. Kinda reminds me of The Doors. Sorry... I kinda hate The Doors. I don't hate this though, so don't worry. Good quality. Again, not really my thing (a lot of stuff isn't) so I don't have any criticism.
The Barstools: Alright, 10 seconds into the song and I really like this. Even though it's country I like it for some reason. I really like the drums and the vocals are good too. I've always had a small appreciation of the guitar in country songs. I'm really surprised that I'm so into this song. Good job ^_^
The Befores: Niiiice voice. Lol, it's Dido. But seriously, good voice. Super soothing and passionate and all of that stuff. Wicked bongos. When the pace picks up it is really really sweet. These vocals touch my inner ear in very pleasing ways. Very very loveable song, awesome quality too, I'm going to save this one. High five!
Ross: I'm not sure why this one isn't in alphabetical order either. Oh well. Har, the genre says Death Metal, but it's not death metal. It's nice though. The voice is a little bored sounding. The quality could be better but that's not going to make me hate the song. That's a drum machine right? The harmonica is a nice addition to the song. Pretty good song. The main things that keep it from being great are the quality, the bored vocals, and the fake drums.
Carpetburn: Ahh. This voice is hurting me. Kinda emoish sounding and I'm not into that stuff at all. Not terrible, but I'm not into it.
Chief Takahah: Oh my god.. this is 13 minutes long. Are you aware of this? This is very strange >_> It sounds like you played guitar over the messages on your answering machine. In fact... I wouldn't be at all surprised if I'm right about that.
Damien Verrett(WHOAMG IT'S ME!): Throughout the whole two weeks we had to make songs my mic wasn't working so I had my chune made but couldn't record vocals until the last two days. This wasn't really a problem though, it's just kind of interesting (that's not true actually). Despite having two weeks to make the song I couldn't come up with any kind of neat chune. The only thing I really like about this song is the lyrics. They're just in such terrible taste and the song is still cheery despite the subject (a guy telling a girl to kill herself and then saying it's not really his fault and he barely cares) I hope I didn't offend anyone... I even got to put my pick up line in the song! (does this smell like chloroform to you?) I kinda feel bad that I thought the song was funny. Moving on...
Dan-O From Five-O: Jazzy song. Sounds like the stuff my dad listens to, so I'm sorta familiar with this kind of chune. Everything is really well played. The voice bugged me a little before but it gets better. Good stuff. The guitar is my favorite part.
Eclectic Spoons: Sex? Or is it six? They're both good words. Uh... what is that voice o_O it's like a british speak 'n' spell. I'm uh... I'm not sure what to say about this. I'm in a hurry to make it stop though.
Flvxxvm Florvm: Eh... I don't really like the singing. Sorta sounds like if Louis Armstrong were a crow and you lit him on fire and let him fly around a room with some guys playing music in there.
The I.P.A.: I'm not that into slow songs like this that feel like they really want to be super deep and emotional. If I were a girl and wanted to cry about something this song might be alright. This emo song is singing about emo songs... Ok I'm confused
Jordan Seavers: Lawl, hi Jordan. I love the tones you used for this one. Always great vocals too. I love this song just as much as all of your other songs. Awesome. I can't believe the piano at 1:30 isn't real >_< and I want to know what sound you used for it. Hope you win.
Kill Me Sarah: I'm not really a country fan and this doesn't attract me as much as The Barstool's song did. Really quiet too.
The Landfills: This voice bugs me. The synthy stuff isn't very attractive either.
Lil' Moses and MC Minimum: Funny rap songs are always nice. The rapping is super catchy too. I love songs about games too >_> (i.e. the counter-strike rap) This might not be the best song this week but it's probably the best and funniest way anyone used the song title (even if Halo is overrated)
Lonbobby feat. Anita: This girl is good. I'm assuming it's Anita. This sounds like it would play in the sex scene of a bad action movie in the desert or something. The song isn't bad though. It doesn't really strike me as fantastic though.
Martin Chitty: I love piano like this. Is that an English accent? High five if it is. Lucky... Mellow song, I like the mood. Nice song.
Matt Glossy and the 8x10s: Tambourine. Yay. This is all playing in my left speaker. Oh ok, there's the right. Good stuff. Cool song, you do a good job of keeping it interesting. The lyrics are good as well. This is a pleasant entry.
Roymond: The only thing I don't like about your singing is the way you said "wrong" and "long." Other than that small factor this is a pretty cool song. The guitar is pretty sweet.
Ryan Rickenbach: This chord progression sounds a little familiar. I'm probably imagining it though. Well sung. The second guitar that comes in for a bit is cool. You do a good job for a song with so few instruments. Good quality.
The Sober Irishman: This also sounds like the kind of stuff my dad listens to. This jazzy stuff is always nice. Nice keys. All of the solos are very very awesome. Neat song
Uncle Boltoph and the Deshead Kid: Reminds me a bit of Social Distortion. I like it. Makes me smile ^_^ Everything in here is really welcome. Nothing sounds bad. I liked this a lot.
The Wages: A little dull. It's off beat a lot too. This song doesn't change enough.
X-Tokyo-River-God: Ahhhhh. Female vocalist. There are so many good female vocalists and this doesn't disappoint. That guitar in the background sounds a tad random. Cool song, a little creepy in a good way. This voice is great. Whatever that instrument at the very end was was awesome. Good song to end my reviews on.
Awesome stuff this week. I was surprised so many of the songs were this good. My favorites were Jordan's song and The Befores' which were also the two that I'll be saving. Great job guys.
Leaf62: Really well recorded. Pretty well written song. Not really my thing, but even still it's a good song. I have no criticism.

I thought that too until I actually played it.Damien Verrett (Jonas) wrote:(even if Halo is overrated)
P.S. : As a solution to all the fighting and hurtfullness in this threat, I advocate peace, love, and more reviews. I also advocate a strict policy of getting the hell over it. Whatever it may be.
