Reviews

Post by Freddielove »

I am doing the reviews this week with J~ who sings on my song this week and many others as well dropping in some comments here and there.

Anit M
Your voice reminds me a bit of the singer from Portishead. Well done, I like the percussive elements and the marimba and flutes are great. I have a feeling this song could get lost in the shuffle with so many songs here though.

J~ says - This is pretty boring.

Bell Green
The minor seventh on the first guitar chord is nice. The way the strings start and stop is distracting, as are the doubled voices. Would be nice to here more range in the vocals.

J~ says - The guitar is nice. The singing is bad.

Jonas Murdock and the Child Inside
I don't know what you are singing about. Variety would be good, the groove here gets repetitive. The backwards parts are cool.

J~ says - It wasn't bad.

Dark Liberty
The drumming sounds better this time around. Sounds like you have been working on it. Vocals need help. I like the solo. Simple and well played.

J~ says - There is a business procurement forum. I don't have cards. I don't like it.

DJ3XHC
Cool and well produced. I like the sampled voice and how you skip over the _ word.

J~ says - This is NIN. It has that I want to screw you beat. I hate this song. I don't like that voice. The beats cool though.

Doscientos
The steel guitar sounds like it in another key from the rest of the song. I like all the reverb. Gives it a nice ambience. Has a great western swing feel.

J~ says - I like it, it's cute.

@elcectic spOOns
I can't understand the vocals, but I guess this is more of an ambient piece anyway, so that's cool. It sounds like it was recorded in a train station.

J~ says - I hate it.

Ocho LO
Catchy groove. Why is the drum panned out right and the guitar squeezed in the middle. Totally crowds the vocals. What was that about Patrick Ewing? If nothing else that will make me listen again. Favorite so far along with Anit M

J~ says
I didn't here it very well. It was catchy.

Freddielove
I don't particularly care for autotuned vocals. The night I recorded this I couldn't sing a note for anything, so the autotune. Otherwise I wouldn't have entered it. I like the music so I will probably rerecord this and post some reconstituted version of this on somesongs.

J~ says - Is that you singing? This is my favorite song so far. It’s got a good beat. This is a completely unbiased review.

Hostess Mostess
Very good as usual. One problem I've had with your songs in the past is that you are reaching on the title. OLVCP is one. Although it’s difficult when you are wanting to write a melancholy song and the week’s title is I Don't like Eggplant. Here it totally works. You may have the best voice here. One nitpick - the background vocals are a bit out of tune in parts. I could lend you the autotuner.

J~ says - I like it. Sounds like something else I've heard already.

Klownhole
For people who dig this style, it is well done. The drums are well played. The stringed instrument sound is cool. The end drags on.

J~ says - Uh its inetersting, its not really my thing. There's a boingy sound in there that is interesting. Kinda weird.

Luke Henly
Brushes are always cool. Like the piano. Sounds like you recorded this in the same hanger as FNIB, which I totally dig. Your songs always sound kind of lazy which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Silent movie eyes, great line love it.

J!~ says - I don't know what to say about that one. It was simple.

Manhattan Glutton
Vocals seem a little flat. I like the guitar. Yeah, the vocals need some more energy and need some reverb, or echo, or both for this song.

J~ says - I wasn't impressed by that one.

Melvin
Well done as usual. This one doesn't rate highly on your scale, but you've set a high standard. The sweetest part of the apple is the bruise is a smart line. Also, everything you said about it.

J~ says - I don't like it. Its not bad. Maybe I've judged it too harshly. Its not my thing.

Noah McGlagulin
Kind of a mess. Really bassy. It’s ambitious which I like, but needs tightening up.

J~ says - Can I go to bed now? This all sounds the same.

Artist
The keyboards are funny.

J~ says - Good effort. Interesting song. Its really interesting sounding. Sounds like he's playing on a Casio keyboard.

Posyden
Cool intro. I wish it was mastered better. Uh, the rap is, ok. Could have done something else there.

J~ says - Boring.

Rone Rivendale
Not digging this. You don’t seem to be singing any particular notes. The start stop is cool.

J~ says – I don’t like it. I don’t hate it.

Smalltown Mike
Southern rock at a festival in the afternoon and I'm drunk on Lonestar, or Miller Lite. Reminds me also of floating on the Guadelupe on a inner tube. Thanks for that.

J~ says - I like it.

Steve Durand
Your songs always make me laugh. Horns are great, drums are weak could be up in the mix a bit.

J~ says - Very funny. Kind of New Orleans Jazz Bandy.

Steve Gamble
Ken Burns called, he wants his song back. I like this, very western campfirey. Love the harmonica. Ha, gotta love the clappy breakdown.

J~ says - Not very original. Sounds like a church song.

Thornberry
Yes. Love the chorus as intro. Your bass player is awesome. I love the syncopation with the beat. You guys would make a great college bar band, if you aren't already.

J~ - Its not fair, the more tired I get tired the more critical the reviews are. It was nice.

Those Meddling Kids
The synth line reminds of Bent, which is awesome. For whatever reason I can listen to singing in a British accent, no matter how off key it is. That might explain the Happy Mondays success as well. Great drum programming. With better equipment this could be something I hear on the Chill station on Sirius radio. Very cool.

J~ says - I liked it.

Al Gore Band
Funny. I like this. Art school. Even my car is parked too far away, that's funny.

J~ - Uh, its funny.

Zero Effect
Kind of catchy, work on you vocals. I love the switch, you never hear anything like that in a regular pop song. Even though it’s simple it works. G and C can be cool.

J~ says - Hmmmm It wasn't bad, it was, I don't know what to say about it. It could be better if they worked on it. It had a catchy beat. It sounds like every other tah tah tah tah song.

Good

Anti M, Doscientos, Eight Legged Oedipus, Luke Henley, Melvin.

Really Good.

Hostess Mostess, Those Meddling Kids

Have to think about who to vote for. Good fight.

anti-m: sounds okay, ends a bit abruptly. that snare sounds slightly out of place, quite an interesting song which is reinforced by your voice, nice.

bell green: very similar sentiment to the last song, i like the guitar picking, vocals aren't that interesting and I'm not sure about the strings/pad/whatever-it-is. good effort though

jonas: i like that bit where the guitar goes reverse for a split second. how come you don't like your vox? with a bit more confidence I reckon they'd sound good, but they're always sooo quiet. interesting to hear a non-nintendo track but you still need to work some dynamics into your songs i think, they tend to not really go anywhere.

dark liberty: This is the sound of you being halfway to writing cool songs. you can play guitar and arrange, now you just need some killer hooks and learn how to develop songs rather than just writing a verse and a chorus and playing them over and ending. hopefully deshead will point out where yer mix is going wrong but one step at a time eh.

DJ3XHC: This is a bit full on techno for my tastes, but that said it is pretty cool, the beats got a punch and it sounds futuristic.

doscientos: i've only ever heard 1 song by you before but i didn't even have to check this was you. so distinctive, cool in a jazzy rockabilly kind way. If that guitar solo was a bit more ripping and widdly i think it would've pushed this right over the edge, it was still cool (and I don't often advocate widdliness) but I'd like to hear this just totally lose control.

eclectic spoons: this is missing too many basic elements for me to enjoy it. interesting vocals.

8 legged oedipus: man, that is one fuzzy guitar. I just got deja vu, this sounds so muich like this band we played with last night called 3 legged dog, weird. they had a song which went "fat chance baby!" how i laughed.

freddielurve: i like the twinkliness at the beginning. ooh, a bit housey, swirly noises, autotune. I don't know why but i kinda like stuff like this sometimes, it reminds me of that "another chance" track, who did that? dammit, aah roger sanchez. yeah this is ok.

hostess mostess: I'm not in ballad mood, but you sing well and it flows and everything.

klownhole: you guys are weird, I keep expecting metal and being denied. once again, the organ and whatever that other sound is throws me. very brooding sound, drums are a bit quiet, vox could do with being clearer.

Luke no.1: your voice sounds different here dude, this is really laid back, probably cos of the drums. like the piano action. I'm gonna give this more listens...

manhatten glutton: the band's never going to kick in is it, is this wages with a different name? This ain't all bad, but i reckon until you do get a band try writing some acoustic type stuff AND try to sing as unlike Kurt Cobain as possible.

melvin:.....i need some food, I'm gonna finish these later

listen to the macarena. then that will be stuck in your head, instead of the al gore band song.

it may not be a good remedy, but i'm no doctor.

i just read a novella for class that was kind of boring and then it ended unsatisfactorily, so if i'm harsh, blame henry james.

al gore band - yeah, this is me. i like to go for unpredictability on these songs, as far as sounds go. or maybe insanity put down in song. something.

the anchors - angry teenagers. i can't understand the lyrics at all, and the style really isn't my thing. but i do like the prodution values on this.

anti-m - is your name a pun auntie em from wizard of oz? there's some cool stuff in here - particularly the flute and some of the percussion sounds floating around. this is pretty cool. the "too far away..." part is a really cool change in the song. good job.

bell green - there's a lot of what sounds like hesitation in this. it might be intentional, but i don't really like it. the chorus sounds a bit much like something like puddle of mudd would write. i'm not really diggin' this.

d. varret - tell what you said backwards at the beginning so i don't have to do the work and play it backward. it sounds like everything is out of tune and not put together probably. your voice is buried and you may not actually be saying words. (i don't use the lyric thread. if i read lyrics while listening, i tend to pay less attention to the actual song. not good.) this is alrigh. the general feel is cool, but i think you just got lazy with a lot of it (haha. i hope the people who constantly tell me that my songs sound lazy read that and laugh.)

dark liberty - the drums are too quiet. they don't kick in at the beginnign like i think you wanted them to. same for the vocals. the song is pretty standard, boring rock. i can't tell if the singer is a teenage boy or a woman who smokes a lot and listens to too much joan jett. you said winter break so i'm assuming you're a teenager. i saw a middle school hardcore band play last week because they were opening for ramona cordova at this particular venue. you blew that band out of the water.

djbarcodeboy - i just want to listen to the next song already. i don't get this genre of music at all. what's with censoring "fuck?" you can say it.

FUCK

see? this is songfight, not clearchannel radio.

doscientos - that's some crazy guitar. i like it's intentional out of tuneness. but it's too much vocal, not enough instrumentation. generally kind of annoying.

eclectic spoons - i don't get this sort of thing either.

eight legged oedipus - i'm sure many people think this is great, but it's not my thing. the guitar is a little too fuzzy i think.

-----i kind of feel like an ass, but nothing in this fight is really grabbbing me yet.-----

freddielove - the vocal effects are annoying. another genre bias. this time it's cheesy cher pop.

hostess mostess - if i hadn't heard (and liked) other songs by you, i don't think i would liking this right now, but this is pretty good. that's a weird statement, but whatever. i'm in a weird mood. some parts remind me of elton john.

klownhole - sinister. this is pretty cool for what it is. i think the synth part really adds a cool dimension to this song.

luke henley - mr. henley, everything about this is great. i love your lo-fi sound and general sloppiness. most people can't pull that off, but you have such quality songs. i wish more songfighters would use a real piano instead of keyboard impersonations. is that a cat meowing in the background?

manhattan glutton - i get a toadies impression right off the bat. that sentence made me think of smashing toads with a baseball bat. i blame grand theft auto for putting such thoughts into my head. so is this ever going to have drums or anything? because it's unsatisfying as just loud guitar and angst. ok. the end of the song just answered my question.

melvin - i always like your songs, but this misses the mark. you should teach dj3x79fiver a thing or two about using swear words. that chorus actually sounds familiar.

noah mclaughlin - that bass is pretty cool. but as the song progresses everything fights for attention, and it feels less like a song and more like a battle.

pigpen - the song is ok, but the delivery doesn't take it where it could. but at the same time it's kind of charming.

posyden - straight out the hood. the "one body, one soul" part made me laugh. so did the part about "862 years and 9 months." it just seemed like an arbitrary number to me.

rone rivendale - haha. this sounds like the some of the weird stuff i made when i first got fruity loops. points for adding weirdness to the long fight.

smalltown mike - boy yiuh. some of the lyrics are pretty amusing. this is actually pretty cool. i like the vocal delivery. yeah. it getting burnt, dawg. hey wait. this last part is from some song by some lady and it was also used by nine inch nails. yeah. i just knew that. i don't have a comment on that either way. i'm just typing out my thoughts as i listen. do you think pitchfork is hiring?

steve durand - i love that you use real horns. this reminds me of king arthur for some reason. overall, the recording sounds weak. it just lacks that punch that could pick it up and give it energy and make it rock.

steve gamble - whoah. it's woody guthrie. this is definitely a highlight of the fight. the guitar tone is great. the harmonica is great too. good job.

thornberry - this has a definite mid 90s vibe to it. it feels like middle school to me. this has great energy that's been lacking from most of this fight - even the rockers. so thank you for that. i love when you can tell that the band is having fun on a recording.

those meddling kids - robert smith? i thought he killed himself. anyways, the sounds are all pretty interesting. and i love flute because i'm a girl. the vocals are oddly mixed, but it works. overall, this is pretty cool. (and no, i didn't actually think that robert smith had killed himself.)

the zero effect - i was hoping your song would suck so i could be clever with my review and do this: "the zero effect - <-----what your song had on me." but, sadly, it doesn't suck. so i can't do that. this is pretty neat. good job. thank you for ending the fight on a positive note.

i'm voting for mr. henley

finally done. i'm going to stay out of the big fights. only weird title from now on.

oh noes! it's past my bed time! i'm missing roseanne on nick at nite!

okay, 2nd time lucky....

al gore band: in the absence of phunts this is pretty rad. this is all about the whistling and percussion for me.

anchors: it's got energy; the vocals could do with a notch more volume and the guitar sounds really horrible in places. but otherwise it comes close to being cool.

melvin: This sounds a bit more distinctive from your other stuff, it sounds like there's more emphasis on the lyircs than previous songs. I like that line " woulda got shot if I hadn't shot him first". I envy the fact that you can actually sing; once i learn, I'm gonna wipe the floor with you :D just you wait.

nyjm: sorry man, but the way you pronounce your R's really bugs me. I think it's the Creed effect again. This song seems to be pulling itself apart, the drums are having difficulty keeping up, and the lead guitar is a bit loud.

pigpen?: yer vox are weird, they seem lazy but at the same time kinda cool, maybe they could be a bit more consistent. anyway, this wasn't grabbing me at first, but i do like the way the guitar and keys start to play off each other.

posyden: I always like the sound of your loops but hear everything sounds a bit thin. The beat could use a bit of phattening, but i guess that's something that'll come with practice. Also, your vox could be really good if they were given a bit more volume and presence. ending's a bit sudden, but this is cool

Rone rivendale: Nothing here I can really get into, but you get points for the crazy track. you music is always mental and then your vox are always really flat, it's a strange contrast.

STM: Chunky guitars there, this seems to keep stalling. Is this meant to be hammed up? the organ and backing vocals give it a big kitsch feel. Not bad tho

Stevie D: I never know what to expect from your songs, and this only adds to your eclecticism. cool good time skank vibe, that mixed with your singing reminds me of yo la tengo which is groovy. the trumpets are excellent but they seem to make the other elements seem weak by comparison. I like this

Stevie G: Feels like I've heard this before. cool song tho. I was going to say it made me think of My Name Is Earl, and then fodroy said woody guthrie and I realised I was being a cultural retard. but yeah, that's what this is. dust-bowl-tastic

Thornberry: that is one noisy guitar. but its cool. the thing that really pisses me off in this song (for the song itself is fine) is the bass, way too jazzy. and jazzy bass in rock is shit.

TMK: the vocals are indeed a bit quiet, see what i did there? I like this cos it's simple, tight and it has a bassoon. and spacey atari noise

the zero effect: my immediate thought was " a bit muddy, meh" but every passing second makes me like it more. I like the fade out to acoustic-y middle. it's simple, but cool and bouncey.

I think I'm gonna vote for myself this week, seeing as none of you bastards did last week :D

but seriously, nothing really amazed me. but there's good stuff abound from the likes of anti-m, damien, freddielove, posyden, bell green, zero effect, doscientos, steven durand. I'll keep listening all week in case there are any slow-burners, but otherwise, there will be an epic battle (in my mind) between Luke and Melvin for the no. 1 spot.

Al Gore Band
--- Al Gore Invented Idiocy? ---
+++ I have to admit, it's a good kind of unlistenable +++

The Anchors
+++ This is old-school punk rock. It's loose, energetic, noisy,
spiteful, and generally awesome. +++
--- Oh god that guitar fill at ~ 1:00 is too crappy ---

Anti-M
+++ The good parts of this remind me of a great band from Canada called "5th project". By good parts, I mean your vocal tone, creepy use of xylophone (?), and roomy percussion. +++
--- The downside is a melodic structure that makes my butt itch. ---

Bell Green
+++ I like how the intro has a ritardando rhythm to it. +++
--- Your vocals are horrible in the first few lines. That synth string sound is horrible. They delivery of a lot of words is still horrible late rin the song... like "play". WHat happened there? Was the TV on and you saw a new infomercial and got distracted? I mean, what was that? ---
+++ It really is a pretty good song. Still emotive. +++
/// Oh shit, I'm already tired of the title. ///

Damien Verrett
--- You expected people to listen to this? ---

Dark Liberty
+++ Good guitar intro. +++
--- Drums and vocals sound like poo. ---
/// Actually, poo is at least entertaining. I would choose poo over this. ///

DJ3XHC
+++ Whoa, I dig that NIN "Closer" beat. The fuzzed out snare... yeah. +++
/// The rest of it so far sounds fairly derivative. Not bad, just not fresh. ///
+++ The kick fills in the last 45 seconds are a cool touch. +++
--- OK, I have to bash the TTS. It's annoying. The only time I've ever heard good TTS on here was Niv's X-Tokyo-River-God "Snow Fort" and a few of their later pieces. ---

Doscientos
+++ Cool intro. I'm diggin' the rockabilliness, it's somehow refreshing. Is this Heather and Phil? +++

Eclectic Spoons
--- This really goes on another 2 minutes? ---

Eight Legged Oedipus
--- It sounds crappy. Yes. It's one riff over and over. And hammy.---
+++ I still loke this track. Maybe it's the danceable feeling? Wait, did I type "loke". I guess that's between "love" and "like". +++

Freddielove
/// This is the kind of song where I imagine a whole bunch of middle aged yuppies dancing around, thinking they're so cool, pretending they don't work in an office, making sales pitches to clients, and struggling with basic e-mail tasks. THey totally think they're on Ibiza.///
+++ When the girl vocals come in, it kicks it up a few notches of coolness. Now you're in car commercials, and my friend says "I dig that song form that commercial." +++
--- I will never get over that auto-tuned glitch sound in the vocals. I hate that, but I must be in the minority, because Cher sells records, and Lonbobby wins songfights. ---

Hostess Mostess
/// For all your Hootie-and-the-Benfoldsfish...ness, you write great songs and cool structures. ///
--- The voice tone is terrible, though. Especially in the intro. I would have left that metronome/snapping sound out. It seems to conflict with other tones in the same range. And man, EQ and compress those vocals. ---
+++ FOr all my complaining, a good tune nonetheless. +++

Klownhole
/// Um, I think I'm hearing music. In there somewhere. ///

Luke Henley
+++ The drum intro reminds me of Shudder To Think's "No Room 9, Kentucky". A great song, and a good thing to remind me of. Luke has a knack for creating a mood. Instantly, and undeniably. I love that, even when it's not a mood I like. I always know a Luke track is going to be an "experience" +++
/// Keep putting your heart and your nuts into everything you do, man. There's a future for you. You could be the Neil hamburger of music. But better. ///

Manhattan Glutton
/// had I been an A&R rep for a major label in 1992, I would have signed you instantly. ///
--- Where's the drums? I want this to rock out like an Archers of Loaf track ---
+++ It's a good riff, and cool delivery nonetheless. +++

Melvin
--- The first two lines sound forced. To many consonants together. "Spraypaint" is just hard to sing, especially in eighth notes. ---
+++ Cool, in an Everclear kind of way.+++
/// Which is not particularly cool, as you can find their records in any 99 cent bin ///

Noah McLaughlin
+++ I still love the songs you write. +++
--- I'm having a hard time hearing the song this week, through all the offbeat crap going on. Sometimes it works, and right now it's not. ---
+++ I like the vocal lead-in at 2:00, and this faster part after it. +++
/// I know you usually use a pitchshifted guitar as the bass. I think that's a big part of the timing problem you get, as pitchshifting usually causes split second disruptions in the timing. Try buying a bass, or borrowing one. If you have to pitchshift, use really small sections at a time, and audition each part to make sure it's on beat.

PiGPEN
/// I really didn't notice your song was playing. I was distracted by my wallpaper which suddenly became interesting. ///

Posyden
--- OMG! My little cousin totally should hook up with you. He just got into rap, and he makes beats on his Pokemon keyboard, and he raps through a Logitech computer microphone. It sounds just like this. ---

Rone Rivendale
--- In the immortal words of Butt-head... "it, like, sucks in ways we've never seen before, which is, um kind of cool." ---

Smalltown Mike
+++ The b3-sounding organ is a nice addition to your sound. I can't get over how cool it is when you chuckle while singing. And you sound a little drunk or strung out, but like your just taking a break from partying and you're totally gonna go lick syrup off a hooker's nipples on a pool table after the song's over. Yes, Smalltown Mike is always in the mdidle of an awesome party. +++
--- Oh, but a lot of the backing vocals are unnecessary, like the right channel. ---

Steve Durand
--- Sometimes, I enjoy your songs, even though it's not my style. I have to say this is not one of the better ones. ---
+++ The horn lines are cool, though. +++
/// It feels like they should have more room, a la Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire." I want this composition to breathe a little more. ///

Steve Gamble
+++ It's interetsing, and well done. +++
/// Not my cup of tea, but a noble effort. ///
--- Still pitchy, even for folkiness ---

Thornberry
/// I need some time alone, baby, to sort out how I feel about this relationship. I mean, I really like spending time with you, but I'm not happy. I don't know if it's you, or me... or us? Can I just have some time alone to think about it? I'll call you. I hope this doesn't hurt, baby. I just can't figure us out, you know? ///

Those Meddling Kids
+++ This is a really cool song. +++
/// I don't mind that you're imitating Robert Smith. ///
--- This is a really crappy recording of a cool song. The electronics are fine, although the bass riff in the right speaker sounds unnecessarily low-bitrate. It's really the vocal sound. And that flute synth ??? Why that patch, dudes? You shoudl have meddled a bit longer on this one ---

The Zero Effect
--- Suckage ---
/// At least the band name is fitting ///

+++ The b3-sounding organ is a nice addition to your sound. I can't get over how cool it is when you chuckle while singing. And you sound a little drunk or strung out, but like your just taking a break from partying and you're totally gonna go lick syrup off a hooker's nipples on a pool table after the song's over. Yes, Smalltown Mike is always in the mdidle of an awesome party. +++
Hands down the best review I've gotten on Song fight. Thanks for making my day.

But how can I deny Rock its roots? Blues and Jazz, right where Rock n Roll came from, how can a jazzy bass be shit if that was ther very thing that gave rock its kick start?

..Man that was like, deep if you think about it.

And that flute synth ???
Thought I'd better do some explaining for this one,

Robert Smith comments are cool, but (without wanting to sound sucky) I was probably trying to sound closer to Luke Henley than Robert Smith. the reason it came out the way it did would almost definitley have something to do with the fact that I'm from england and not NY.

Also, if the vox were louder you'd have heard my crappy "ironic" lyrics about why the vocals are too quiet, I deserve all I get for that.

and the reason that flute synth sounds crap is because it's not a flute, that said it doesn't sound much like an oboe either. I'm open to ideas as to what could replace it. should it be A) something else I can actually play and own, eg, guitar or kazoo. or B) a patch that s'posed to sound synthy and hence less cheesy, eg, more Atari noises (damien verret stylee). suggestions welcome

well, as an experiment take a couple of rock tunes, for example Teen Spirit and Rockin the free world, then imagine them with an irredeemably fret-wanky bassline instead of the one they have and see if it adds anything. I've nothing against a nice bit of trad. jazz, but there's a time and a place; and 90's style rock is neither. imho

i just want to chime in and say there's some really awesome stuff in this fight. it'll be tough deciding whom to vote for -- i've only listened to about half the songs, but standouts thus far include melvin, manhattan, bellgreen, klownhole, and HoMo.

full reviews forthcoming.
