Here are some reviews! I don't know what I'll vote for yet.

king arthur - hey, you mentioned the bills... that's my team. hmm, i think you're referring to a "buffalo '66" type situation? anyway, moving on. the feel here is very country, which is fun. i'm not sure if the cat theme is built into the lyrics enough for the attention - perhaps there should be more lines devoted to talking about you vs. the cat. like it tho.

db&ti - i like how j$ fit in clips of my spoken-word vox into the choruses. the echoey drums are great. that's one of his bits :) i like how my synth bits and his bits fit together, nice synergy. thanks, j$!

chin - port hueneme, eh? you in the navy? i know some people out there. the different vocal parts aren't quite together which is bothering me a bit. the little breakdown was good. the guitars one in each ear is sounding kinda busy to me. pretty cool. could be tigher, but still enjoyable.

lechic - cool. i wouldn't mind seeing a translation, i don't know much french. anyway this is cool and fun but too short.

ken - the end of each line sounds kinda offbalance, but i like the sound of this. the repetition of the "lap" lines is a bit overmuch, it was funny the first time but repeating it the second time in a row seems like beating it in. another, different good line would be better than that. the "good housekeeping" bit is great. good.

mcmilk - the funkvoice is pretty cool. have to admit i don't understand the chorus line. this is very genre-fitting tho. the title and feel is quite funk. i like it.

jmann - another one where the ends of the lines don't feel balanced... the chorus part is especially good here. the ending is too familiar.

gert - i like that guitar part there. weird vocal cadence but it might work anyway. kinda stopstarty. "knives/lives" is good stuff there. there are definitely parts of this that are great, particularly the guitar, and the vocals are pretty cool, but i don't like it as much as i want to. mmm, wait, this solo section might be changing my mind, that was awesome.

eviltwin - hmm, not that j$ sounding. needs instrumentation. no, i don't really like it. not fond of the phrasing.

ned - that guitar tone is pretty jerry garcia-ish, but the song itself isn't. nice, but the lyrics kinda cheapen the whole thing. hmm. if i don't listen to the words it's cool. nice instrumentation & groove.

gangsta - that's a cool intro. i love that sound. the lyrics are kinda meh typical rap stuff, but that synth loop is great.

luke - interesting, but you're kind of losing me on the rhythmic looseness. especially on the piano... i keep getting into it, and then wham, pulled back out.

djb - hmm, the robot voice and whisper aren't doing it for me. i don't think you're supposed to bloe into the mic that much. simultaneously silly and aggressive, which is not my favorite combination.

sock - hmm, another one with silly rhymes... i think rhyming every line is too much. the drums are very cool and i loved the roulette wheel sound.

klown - this one is cool. heh, i like the combination of guitar & vox you've got going. little breakdown spoken word bit is funny. i'm liking the ending part, but i think it should end about a minute earlier unless something different happens. ah, i see you agree. heh. that's a good ending tho.

melvin - this is pretty cool, but i feel like jimmy eat world did it better. the chorus or whatever this part is, sounds a lot like them. pretty catchy, but i feel like it needs to feel less derivative. i like the genre tho.

max - had to do this one, eh? :) "what cats are supposed to do" heh. some of the vox remind me of this guy named kenny white, but not so much that it feels derivative. i like the feel, but i think george w bashing in songs is getting played out. i'm no fan, but it doesn't seem like there's much new there. anyway...

favorites: king arthur, db&ti, lechic, ken, mcmilk, klownhole, melvin

Chin Music
You could be one of the singers from School House Rock. We're not into the little MIDI horns interlude. The female vocals sounded nice, but didn't seem necessary. Decent recording and OK song.

DJ Big Dick feat. Ryan of the Anchors
MC Hawking does the rapping computer thing way better. Was that a sample from Mortal Kombat or something? The beatboxing is cool. One of us thinks the part after that is funny, one of us doesn't. Good sci-fi noises.

Dollar Bill and the Inkpoints
We're of a split mind again. 50% of us think this sounds very Clash-y. We both think it's a little monotonous. Yeah, just not pulling us in.

Gangsta From the Hood
Not as bad as one of us expected it to be. Tricky or Massive Attack come to mind. It doesn't have any changes but it's short so that's not really a problem. We like that.

Gert
LE ROCK!!! Great musicianship, but the singer in the verses is turning us off. Kinda whiny. The chorus singer kicks ass. Are they the same singer? Three verses in a row? Could use a change sooner. Seems like we're in for a long song... Probably the bridge/solo could have come in after chorus 2, then gone into verse 3 then ended with chorus 3.

Johnny Cashpoint's Evil Twin
Where's the music? This is weird.

Jonathan Mann
We're not so into the lyrics, or singing style... It's a little Jonathan Richman-y. One of us can't hear your voice w/o thinking of Super Mario anymore and wanting to hear your Toad voice. We like the shooby-doo-wops, too, like everybody else.

Ken's Super Duper Band n' Stuff
"Circadian rhythm"? Whoa. We're looking forward to the full band version. We love those "New Incredibles" of yours.

King Arthur
Sounds like too many words too fast. The drum beats are kinda Casio-tone, in a bad way. Not really up our alley (no cat joke intended).

Klownhole
Damn, this is loud. Sounds like the Melvins a little. Keep singing like that and you might turn into Lemmy. Actually one of us thinks you sounds kinda like Jon Benjamin, at least during the spoken part. Damn, this is long. We had to skip forward a bit there...

Luke Henley
We like this song. Reminds one of us of Narbotic, very old school. Sloppy and lo-fi in an endearing way.

Max the Cat
We like the squeezebox, though you've got more of a zydeco flavor going. The second verse is a bit ham fisted and seems kinda out of left (right?) field. Tres political.

MC Milk Plus
Oh God, more rapping... Good groove. The chorus is smooth. Your flow in the verses is OK, we're just not into your voice or something. Nice and short, though.

Melvin
We like this one, more then we usually like Melvin. More reverb and dissonance, those are cool. Maybe bring the dynamics down a lot more in the verse, pare it down a lot more, for more contrast with the chorus. The drums could be played/programmed a little better, they're kinda spazzy. We like the soaring vocals/backups.

Ned Plimpton Orchestra
Starts out very Phishy/jammy but fortunately gets more Zappa-esque as other reviewers have mentioned. SF! needs more Zappa inspired stuff. Funny cat voice. Love the organ. This might be going on a bit too long, though, too many repeats, or too much kitty voice or something. We like the drums. Want to drum for us some time? Oy, rondo!

Sockpuppet
Lyrics, very, painful. Some of the music is interesting, so a promising start to your electronic music entries as Sockpuppet.

Le Chic Sonique
We are:
Baroness Derriere - performer
Artus de Tu - producer

We look forward to entering a song that's longer than 40 seconds next time. Au revoir!

King Aurhur - The trailing guitar in the chorus is a nice touch. Good hook. I feel like I've been thrust into 70s era rock a la David Wilcox meets Phil Lesh. On a mix note it sounds a little left heavy. I think it might be the bass. I find the bass one of those instruments that serves better up the middle by Q. I like. Well constructed. Well written.

Jonathan Mann - Great bottom end. The drum mix with the bass is sweet. Subliminally the tinkering in the right ear is kind of cool in the mix. I agree with the Jonathon Richman comparison except it's way cooler. Keeper for the vocal ending alone. Great work. Hmmmm.

MC Milk Plus - Well this is a great merger of jazz with white boy british rap. Something kind of cool about the british tinge with the attitude and then you make that hook in the chorus that has been stuck in my head for the entire week. Production A+. Fun guitar work and vocals stellar. Vote.

Le Chic Sonique - I can tell first off that you are not all that french as there is just too much anunciation. If you dragged certain consonants and rolled your r's more I would have been sold on this as I'm a sucker for a sexy female french voice and accordian; with just a sprinkle of percussion to round it all out. Ever heard Nouvelle Vague? I think it's the perfect length. Any more and it would ruin the need to want to hear and explore it more. Kind of like the bad cat. Hate to bring it home to mom, but it can sneak into your window anytime to sleep with you. Nice touch. I like, but I just can't get past the fact that you ain't the french seductress I want you to be and have decided to purr in someone else's bed.

Melvin - This kind of reminds me of My Bloody Valentine meets Swervedriver. The inverted reverb is very cool in the verses. My biggest complaint is not in the song, cuz it's a good song especially with all the couterpoint back-ups, but in the fact that it doesn't sell it for me for the title. In lieu of the different takes on the title I found this to be weak for content. Maybe with a different name I'd feel differently about it.

Ned Plimpton Orchestra - Great seperation and I love, LOVE the drum sounds. It's a little loose at points where I think it should be a little tighter. It almost sounds like a reverb thing. Makes things sound a little late. The different personalities is an interesting movement in terms of the title. It gets a little long in the tooth with the solo, albeit perfect in essence for the music. Reminds me of a christmas song. Great instrumentation and production, but didn't get the vote.

Gangsta from tha Hood - The throbbing keyboard patch is very trippy. It almost takes over the mix a bit. Pretty Gangsta. Not bad enough though.

Max the Cat - Max reminds me of a bastard offspring of Jim Croce and Dr John. I love the instrumentation with the spoken/sung vocal and the harp arpeggiated descension is a sweet transition. Bass run before the chorus adding counterpoint is a great movement also. This, from my perspective is some of the best production in this fight. Hooky in all the right ways and really sells the title. Wish the fade was a little less 1950s Ed Sullivan. I think you could have stretched it out more evenly. I'd vote for it, but Milk beat you to it. His hook was my favourite.

Luke Henley - Good effort on the piano. I hear you working those notes. The melody reminds me of Arcade Fire. Nothing can take away from the energy of your tunes. Noise floor sucks dude. You must be able to find a way to beat some of it. It's sooooooo strong it gets on the annoying side of things. This one didn't scream Bad Cat to me.

Klownhole - YESSSS!!!! Reminnds me of The Supersuckers crossed with the Melvins and Mudhoney. I love the heaviness. There was a band in Toronto called Grasshopper that reminds me of this insanity. The drum roll section RULES!!!!! A little long, but live this would kick serious ass. I almost voted for this.

Chin Music - The genre is right for the title, but I'm not diggin the loose drums. Great energy and the seperation is excellent. Pretty good, but didn't vote for it.

Dollar Bill and the Inkpoints - Cool keyboard stuff, but for some reason this one doesn't really do it for the title. Production is great. Song's kind of weak.

DJ Big Dick feat. Ryan of the Anchors - The beat boxing is cool. Other than that it sounds kind of thrown together and the vocoder is just too loud. I heard DJ Big Dick is a kitten in person.

Sockpuppet - The music is pretty cool. The delayed reggae vibe on the drum pattern is great. "... prat" I'm cringing at your reach. This just kind of got monotonous after a while even with the tasty drum bits.

Gert - So greasy!!! This may be the tightest we've been for Songfight! I love Mike's vocals on this tune. Attitude of a mutha fuckin bad cat.

Ken - Rules. The tone of your voice is so pleasing. That silly little hook in the chorus has also been stuck in my head all week. Awesome. Continue to RTFO! Nice job.

Johnny Cashpoint's Evil Twin - This doesn't sound like Johnny Cashpoint at all. The birds chirping in the background is great. Not really into it for the title, but kinda cool.

Awesome fight. Thanks for the music.

Well actually.......
Like you, I am also of French Canadian descent!
What's wrong with us French Canadian ladies? Are we not good enough pour vous? As for the over enunciation, it is my obligation as a chanteuse to make sure my audience understands me. N'est-ce pas?
Thanks for your encouragement, and I'm glad you enjoyed my accordion. There will be more.

bisous!

Pardon any typos, I'm whipping this up pretty quickly....

Chin Music
Fav thing here has to be the "Bad Cat" into "he just doesn't care" because that part rolls together nicely. It's a bit sullen but interesting with the horn break and all...I like that slide guitar on the left. Light, entertaining. The woman could've harmonized the lead vocal more, that would've been nice.

DJ Big Dick
The robot voice has been done so many times before, so much better. What a ripoff. Everytime the song almost gets rolling, it's interrupted by bullshit like that whole beatbox part in the middle. I bet that DJ Big Dick doesn't cry: he just takes a piss. This is pretty weak, especially given all the shit you talked.

Dollar Bill and the Inkpoints
The sonics of this tune are just great. The synth parts I mean, the development of them, the instrumentation and subtle trailing off of the vocal. I really dig that stuff. Could've used a part where the entire beat kicks in harder. A little too much reliance on the vocal, which is just very boring in its steady rhythm. Want to hear it break into heavier instrumental action.

Gangsta from the Hood
Not much to say, just not much there.

Gert
The Hip Cola's low "bad cat" reminds me of especially thick chocolate milk, just oozing in a long strand. It's a little long and strong. Greasy bastards. I got to double Des's rhythm guitar super tight, he's just such a master craftsman! And Leaf is a such a skin-slapper and a freaky bastard, just as much as TheHipCola is a fudge-knuckling mixmaster, and Tonetripper is a tight ass bass squeezer. Then there's Smalltown Mike, he wears a boon liver coat, rocks the mic like no other.

J$ evil twin
Not much song here. Nothing to say.

Jonathan Mann
The light feel of this is fun, but it just didn't grab me. The "shoobie doos" seem sort of forced in there, I was hoping for a big bridge and key change or something to surprise and delight. I do like how the waa-waa's sound like cats.

Ken's super duper band...
Where's the band? It's a good tune, catchy, vocals almost get lost at a couple points, like it was a one take vocal...feels like it was done quickly, felt like it could use more chord changes during verse and chorus, or more distinction between chorus and verse; but it's infectious and I enjoyed it.

King Arthur
Sounds great, the jamming, the blues, I was looking for more talk about the cat, during the chorus. Well done and would definitely listen again. Jamming, fun.

Klownhole
This is also one of my fav's in the fight. It's got great melody during that verse, the guitar is messy and stuff, the whole tune would benefit by being cleaner, but this is jamming. I love the verse vocal, it's something I heard before...but it's killing me. If this whole mix were cleaner and produced to sound a big "larger" it'd be just retarded. The Cult, that's one thing it reminds me of, except heavier.

Le Chics Sonique
[see Tonetripper's review]. Love the voice, and the french, it's way too short!!!!!! Would benefit from a heavy metal bridge...or some techno...

Luke Henley
I dig this alot, mellow, when it changes a little for the "scars / stories" line, I really like that too. Reminds of of Luke Henley's Courage during the chorus, I like that part, but it feels like it might be better off singing more about the scars...and ghosts to haunt them. And stories to hide them. I like those words quite a bit, the whole state of mind it sets me off in. Makes me want to cry, it's beautiful like that.

Max the Cat
Ah I want to be on a beach sipping down margaritas when I hear this. Such character in the vocal! The lyrics are so explicit in their storytelling...except when I realize this is about George W. Bush, I think...I like the goofy feel. And knowing that there's a subliminal meaning underneath what sounds like totally explicit lyrics. At first I really thought it was about a cat! Such an airy, smooth feel with the harp, or whatnot.

MC Milk
Holy shit I heard this groove and I just rocked my face off with this, and the rhythms of the rapping, that wah guitar...this groove is just the best, best groove of the fight by far. Great lyrical delivery, the rhythms. Keeper. I could listen to that groove all night.

Melvin
Here's another one i really dig in the fight, the drums sound a little too "canned" or electronic, but I like the vocal effects and the guitars coming in and out. The tambourine break is great, but that whole part makes me want to call the song "Don't Go". It's a great, catchy pop melody there, digging it quite a bit.

Ned Plimpton
I think? Not sure, process of elimination says so. Incredible instrumentation in this one! A little too silly to me, the music is already kind of silly, the vocals seem a little much for me, all the talk of poo and such...great jazz going on though, great rhythms and I like the changes, the walking bass line.

Sockpuppet
Having trouble with the out of tune vocal, but that stretchy sound is fabulous. Some of the sonics with the beats, as well. Almost really gets a cool thing going, between the keyboard and drum part. The rhyming is too much, too many rhymes. That stretchy sound freaks me out...and I love it, all in the same breath...

i had a listen to a few of 'em

Melvin and Ken were cool though I though Ken's tune started feeling really repetitive around halfway

I thought about King Arthurs that although it was pretty good it wasn't my thing but then there are lots of nice little details here that drew me in. can't believe that got only a vote

Max impresses me with his range of styles. this hit me in a similar way to KA's tune.

Le chic was kinda charming

I thought the intro to Klownholes' was rubbish and then it kicked in and it's the best I've ever heard them. how long is this track?! you must have all been knackered after that

Milk's a cheeky one

Johnny Mann: "she's fat because she feeds on my sex drive" haha, nice. you put together a nice tune

Ned: Shazam!

haha, I'm gonna go back and read all the Sockpuppet reviews

Smalltown Mike's singing was good

nowt else really grabbed me

Incidentally French women are the finest, sexiest women on the planet. I was being shy and coy. I was playing a fumbling Hugh Grant impression.

Nouvelle Vague was in heavy rotation last summer and probably one of the funnest cover records ever produced. One of the best records to drink and party hard on a patio in a summertime night cranked. The compliment was paid due to your delivery and I totally get your need to over-anunciate. It is truly the mark of good french chanteuse. : ) Come to think of it one of the french singers in Nouvelle Vague (one that comes to mind is the cover of Too Drunk to Fuck) sings, speaks and laughs in french at the end and it pretty much makes me melt everytime. It sounds like it was an early take. I think that's what I would have hoped for in your tune, but then I'm asking the moon, the earth and the stars as it is a stellar piece of music already. I look forward to more Le Chic Sonique. I'm assuming Lunkhead was the master producer behind it and if that is the case he rocks. Sweet ass production. Next time melt me.

Making Plans for Nigel is the best cover XTC could ever have asked for by Nouvelle Vague. In addition I heard that their shows (they played a while back in Toronto) are a lot different than the record. Wilder. I can only dream as I didn't go.

Well, thank you!!! That made my day. I'm sure it made Gert's day too.

I'd be lying if I told SF that I wasn't surprised as hell that we won. I think a few didn't even vote in Gert and I know I didn't vote for us, so I was, like most of the dudes, taken a back when I saw the results. So thanks all who voted for us.

Gert is possibly the most productive band I've ever played with and all the musicians are some of the finest musicians/craftsmen I've played with, so it goes a long way when you consider that we've never met all of each other in person and that we have such monstrous chemistry whilst writing/playing over the internet. It really raises the bar when you have to live up to the expectations of 6 singers, 6 writers, 6 producers, 6 engineers, 6 bass players, 6 guitar players, 6 keyboard fiddlers, 6 drummers (well really only Leaf although Des rocks pretty hard on the skins and I've been known to dabble - not to mention some of the great drum programmers - see TheHipCola). It's not easy getting much past them in terms of energy or tightness. So I thank you mostly from Gert. We all take a stand when it comes to where these tunes go and show humility in the process. Not easy when you have 6 ego-maniac alcoholics with a temperment for bbqs and good drugs.

Long live Gert!

Humilty?

Speak for yourself. Humble is for losers.

I really amuse myself, don't I?

I forgot to vote. I really dug Plimton's, Milk, hell, a whole whack of tunes in this fight. I kinda found this fight inspiring, in that a whole bunch of people put some big effort into their tunes, and there was some cool different things going on.
