orchestra patches

What orchestral (strings/woodwind/brass) patches do you folks use? I'd prefer freeware but if there's nothing decent to be had, I'll look elsewhere.

Edirol Orchestral HQ. Right around 100mb and sounds way better than 3gb Garritan Personal Orchestra.

I am a heavy user of soundfonts.

This has some pretty good solo instrument patches and decent ensemble patches.

I think that the solo strings are the best ones in here. The brass patches are only so-so.

Get a Triton, that's what all the hip-hop gangstas use.

No way! You mean, like, all those string "samples" in modern-day rap?

Sober, your keyboard knowledge consistently impresses.

Well, the true "baller" will use a Fantom X board, like Nelly et al.

The average gangsta on the street, however, will have a Triton LE61 set up next to their Numark turntables, going in through their SB16 soundcard into Acid. With that setup, you can call yourself a producer. Make sure you call yourself a producer often, though. You wouldn't want anyone to think you weren't a producer, considering how phat your factory beats can be at 16bit mono.

But seriously, the Triton is a good board for orchestral sounds and hiphop/electronica. You can probably find the LE61 on craigslist or ebay for close to $500.

There's also the Triton Extreme, which is expensive as hell, and the Triton TR, which is a sack of shit.

My next board is a Nord, one of the little red ones for small gigs where I don't want to haul my ridiculous Motif around. I will upholster it with leopard print as soon as I get it.
