Nice to see you back Phil.

QOTD:
Every time the FMs put up a new song in the "Five Years Ago Today" on the front page, or however far back they go each time, I listen to the song. I've never missed a single one since I joined last November. Right now they have "State Shirt - Back To The Airplane" listed. Fucking great song! I'd feel like Steve Martin did in the Jerk if I ever see my name on that list. He hates these cans!. Stay away from the cans!

I often go back through the archives. Mostly when a member shows up with an old joined date and I don't know them, but everyone says hi as if they're old friends. So I go back to see what they've done.
Just recently "The White Hat" came back, so I went and listened to his stuff, and you can clearly hear him developing a style from fight to fight and how he grew as a musician. I love seeing/hearing that.

I hate to say that I tend to take Song Fight, in general, for granted. Not intensionally, but I just feel that SF will always be here on my computerized thingy everyday when I push the any key.
I'm not really as interested in SF's history, as much as I am interested in the members and the history of their music. I LOVE original music in every way. I honestly never disregard a song for bad recording abilities. In fact, I've found some great writers and composers here that I admire.
The first time I ever heard Brad Sucks was from sifting through the achieves.
I've found so much organic original music here, and there is more coming everyday. But more importantly, musicians are actually developing their sound here right before our very ears.

Yeah, that's what I love about this place. Unfortunately it also makes it harder and harder for someone to really start out fresh since now there's so many people who are putting out top-notch stuff. The one thing I do miss from the early days is that most of the early entries were just for fun and experimenting, and now when someone enters something experimental they tend to just get shat on and discouraged.

pricklypears is one of my favorite Songfighters of all times, and if he were to come back I don't think he'd have any reason to stay. Hell, if I were to come along today with the shit I was entering back in 2001, I'd probably never even consider "joining in" for reals.

erik and fluffy arguing is the history of songfight in a nutshell. :)

but like erik said, so much is lost with dumbrella. people come and go. poor june fades away and billy's little trip seems here to stay......

but the archive lives on. so all you n00bs, go listen to starfinger's "more than soup". dig on some brother machine, sonofsupercar, dylan nau, kissing contest, bloodberries and cream, xiu house rocks, future boy, jim of seattle, max the cat, and so many more and learn the history of songfight by listening to it.

More like erik treating everything I say like an argument when it isn't. What the hell is up with that, I don't know.

Note that some of the stuff in the archive got retroactively changed. At one point, Narbotic went and rerecorded many of his entries and slipped them in, which I didn't find out about until I had a hard drive crash and lost all my mp3s and when I redownloaded Song Fight I discovered that his nice and charming lo-fi stuff had been replaced by... well, still lo-fi, but not as charming versions. In the original I LOVE YOU, for example, he did both the male and female parts, and some of the lines were different (in particular, female robot originally said, "Well... I stay away from cracks" which I still think is way funnier than the current version's line).

It's also a bit sad that Narbotic allowed narbotic.com to lapse. That was the site which Song Fight originally grew from! For those who don't remember it, back in the early days most of the Dumbrella sites were basically "send me a title and I'll make something from it;" explodingdog did it with stick figure comics, and Narbotic did it with song titles. Somewhere along the line he decided to turn it into a competition, and early on it was mostly just Dumbrella folks joining in.

After he stopped updating narbotic.com, he started a band called Breaker! Breaker! and many of their good early songs were remakes of Narbotic classics. I also once stumbled across some mp3s he had in a semi-hidden directory called "Electrical Hands" which I think was a proto-Breaker! Breaker!, and most of the songs in that were also remakes of Narbotic classics, though there were also some really good originals in there too. I actually do still have those, even.

Fortunately, <a href="http://breakerbreaker.org/">Breaker! Breaker!</a>'s site is still around. They seem to not have put out anything in a while though, and their news/shows page is empty. Did they break up? Who knows!

SF motivated me to step up my production and learn new things. This place is a great place to learn. Sometimes raising the bar is a good thing.
But I can relate to what you're saying. It would be a shame for someone not to post their music because they felt uncomfortable about their recording. I LOVE those lo fi recording that are filled with brilliants.

It's takes a special type of man to be able to wear tinsel on the testicles and look aluring without appearing tacky. Not many of us can pull it off, but when done correctly as in the case of the gentleman above, the effect can be very arousing indeed.

OMG. That really is a picture of Narbotic.

And to answer your question Fluffy: Breaker! Breaker! is no more.

It looks like such a goodbye photo. The SongFight Fairy leaving forever in the back of a station wagon. "Kisses, you soldiers of song. I'll send a Postcard, maybe."

So, what happened to Norbotic? It seems I kind of read something around here about how Song Fight came to be and how Spud and JB came to run the joint. I can't remember where or how I came across that.

Jim, I like how you interpreted that picture. If that picture was blown up to an 8 ft X 4ft portrait hanging on a gallery wall, your words would be engraved on a brass plaque mounted below.

1) You might have heard a re-telling of that tale here.

2) Narbotic is still doing music, both solo and with Metalmags; but no longer with Breaker!Breaker!

Sir, you should have come up with an excuse to post at least two thirds of Breaker Breaker from the same road trip.

That photo, with captions, would look good all gussied up as one of those sepia toned frilly framed dress up in wild west outfits tourist photos. Or with laurels and ribbon draping cherubs.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.
