rugby is BADASS.Sheail wrote:Enough about protein, there's a world cup on!!! Admittedly USA and Canada aren't exactly world beaters in rugby but still, you gotta get excited. I heartily suggest watching a game, its like "football" but better.
i was watching Scotland beat the crap out of Portugal at the pub today.
That was after seeing Brazil beat the US 3-2 in soccer, and the Redskins beat the stinkin Dolphins in OT in American Football.
3 sports in 1 day, yay.

I used to enjoy Michelina's dinners before I decided to be healthy. That's not to say they're crap. Some of them are fairly nutritionally balanced; I just don't eat much processed food anymore. You get protein from the grains, but not a lot, and it's not high-quality unless you combine it with legumes. Meat is certainly the most famous protein source, and it's a good one. You'd probably do better with more vegetables, less white flour, and less white rice, but I'm making that transition myself and I can tell you it's no fun at first. You'd probably benefit quite a bit from switching from canned to fresh fruit. Assuming you know how to select good fruit, any change in the quality of your fruit-eating experience ought to actually be positive. But any gains you make there you will lose in convenience. Fresh food will rot if you don't eat it quickly. It's pretty horrible when you get busy and whoops there goes all your food. But uh, do what you want. You've got the option of not worrying about your health until after it goes sour. And I've heard of much worse diets than what you've described.fodroy wrote:I just don't know anything about nutrition. I don't think it's boring. I just like making smartass comments. I usually eat things like microwave dinners by Michelina because they're cheap. I eat a lot of rice in various forms. Rice noodles are good. I like Asian food (in general) a lot, so I eat a lot of that. I eat meat, but not beef. I don't like the idea of eating cows. Birds don't bother me. I eat turkey sandwiches. I also eat bananas and sometimes canned pears or mandarin oranges. I don't eat much in the way of vegetables. I eat waffles for breakfast. No dairy ever though, unless it's like one piece of cheese on a sandwich from the store or a restaurant. That is how I eat. I hope it was interesting. I don't know what these things mean in terms of nutrition.Lord of Oats wrote:There are probably better ways of telling me you think nutrition is a boring topic. I didn't see anyone talking about anything else.fodroy wrote: I don't know then. I eat moths.
But seriously, do moths have protein?
You've caught me out of my field a little bit here, but my best guess is that moths, like most bugs, are a good protein source, though you've got to eat quite a few before you get your daily requirement.

I love quac, and I make a mean one. Secret ingredient I've recently learned about in Mexico ... white vinegar. Lots of cilantro, little garlic, ripe tomatoes, on salty corn chips...yum
I eat fish a lot, but stay away from the bottom feeders (mercury and such), got really sick on skate in Singapore so all things shark are out anyway, and don't eat red meat (except when traveling to try the local dishes). Other than that I don't think about nutrition in any truly "strategic" manner. I don't like junk food (processed crap, chemical weirdness) but love ice cream to a fault, and love fresh, well-prepared food from anywhere. Home cooking rocks!

3. I do eat hummus on crispbread a lot.
4. To synthesize the legume and burger idea, Alton Brown gave out a recipe on Good Eats for some split pea burgers, and those are probably some of the best vegetarian burgers out there (and the peas and brown rice ought to work well together, amino acid-wise),
5. But something about the idea of vegan food just makes my meal less enjoyable, so I always put cheese on them.
2. No, but I don't believe they are supposed to. I love veggie burgers though.
3. I love hummus. I also another thing you mentioned, Lamb. These foods usually cost a bit more so they aren't necessarily in my diet staples. Also, hummus can be fattening if consumption is not watched.
4. You'd probably like the black bean burger. Same principles and damn good. (Whats strange is that I prepared brown rice and peas for lunch today)
5. I have the exact same mental hang up. There is a restaurant here that resembles 'fast food' but its all better for you. Like the french fries are baked and their main burgers aren't meat. They do have a real burger on the menu...range fed beef? Something like that. Lots of wraps... yadda yadda. I never feel 'full' after eating there and its never as enjoyable. (Evos)
1. I make a mean guac too. The vinegar is a nice trick. While I do use cilantro...I go easy on it. Adding sour cream, MINCED onion, & shredded lettuce can make it more hearty while adding some flavor. (also note that you can use a little lime to 'tang' it up as well)roymond wrote:

3. I LOVE ICE CREAM. I have to NOT EAT IT... 'cause once I get started... It becomes a habit in no time flat. One pint of ice cream on Tuesday means I'll come up with an excuse to have another one on Thursday...then all of a sudden its Friday night and I deserve a little party after the work week...then Saturday... well...obviously Saturday afternoons in Tampa need the compliment of ice cream... Sunday...the day before going back to work, well I'd better treat myself before the weekend is completely over. (I'm almost the same way with pizza)

When pronounced properly and you roll your R, cilantro sounds sexy. I don't care how you say coriander, it just sounds French Canadian.Caravan Ray wrote:People who call coriander 'cilantro' should be lined up against a wall and shot.roymond wrote: Lots of cilantro...

In the States, coriander is referred to as a spice, which is ground coriander seeds and has a completely different flavor from the leaves and stems.

I'm not really sure how to take this. There's plenty of research to back me up. The fats in meats are much healthier to consume when the animals are eating their natural diet.Caravan Ray wrote:You do realise you are talking absolute crap here, don't you? See - now that's the problem with Americans in general - you are crap at international team sport.Hoblit wrote:There. I fixed it for you.Sheail wrote:Enough about protein, there's a world cup on!!! While the rest of the world is out happily playing soccer or rugby or cricket or hockey or netball etc...etc... against each other, Americans have their own ridiculous little games that the other 96% of humanity has no interest in - and then they call their domestic competition a "World Series"!
It has always been my theory that if the USA actually had some decent sporting teams that could compete significantly in any of the major World Cups, then they may not feel the need to keep going off invading people. Or then again - maybe that is the American idea of internationl sport - too bad, because they even seem pretty crap at that too - the current Test Series in Iraq isn't going too well...
